What is it?
Microdermabrasion is a cosmetic procedure performed by a skincare specialist also known as an aesthetician or even a dermatologist. The special device used loosens dead skin cells and sloughs them off, revealing newer younger-looking cells beneath. There is a choice of two devices, one, the Crystal microdermabrasion bombards the skin with tiny particles through a wand. The second, Diamond-tip microdermabrasion involves a wand or device that touches the skin directly as it removes the dead skin cells.
The point of removing the layer of dead skin cells is to reveal younger-looking, firmer skin cells, thus more youthful. Who doesn’t like to look younger? So, if you’ve got wrinkles, stretch marks, uneven skin tone, melasma (dark patches), hyperpigmentation or scarring, this type of treatment can help you. Often more than one treatment is required but progress is often seen after a few treatments. Most often wrinkles due to aging or sun damage are what lead people to microdermabrasion procedures.
Acne and Acne Scars
Depending on why you have acne, microdermabrasion may have a positive effect on the recurrence of breakouts. It may also help to improve the look of scarring. Deep scarring will not disappear, but the appearance may still lessen. The true benefit is that microdermabrasion does not require anesthesia, nor is it invasive, making it safer for most people, thus preferred.
Treating blackhead breakouts that recur is also another item that can be treated with microdermabrasion. Treatments during a breakout of either acne or blackheads are not recommended, but in between breakouts making the decision to treat the skin with either the Crystal or Diamond-Tip techniques just may help the skin recover faster and the breakouts lessen. With the ease of the procedure and lack of risks of anesthesia, microdermabrasion may be the right procedure for you. Your skincare professional can help you make the appropriate decision.
When stretch marks first appear either as a result of weight gain or pregnancy, this is the time to consider microdermabrasion. The procedure often lightens the appearance because it encourages cell turnover. Old cells slough off faster and new cells take their place faster, appearing tighter and more youthful.
Where does it work?
Microdermabrasion works in a variety of places on the body such as:
face, including neck, jawline,(think tiny wrinkles from smiling or frowning) cheekbones, or forehead (mainly age-related wrinkles)
upper thighs often the site of pigmentation issues and stretch marks
buttocks, another spot for acne and stretch marks
around the hips/saddlebags
abdomen and waistline where stretch marks most commonly pop up
